Venezuelan Congress Funds Import of Toilet Paper
HAVANA TIMES – The National Assembly of Venezuela approved a loan of 519 million bolivars (US $ 82.38 million) to import toilet paper and other personal hygiene products to combat the shortage in the markets, reported DPA news.
The loan will also allow the government to buy sanitary napkins, toothpaste, diapers and body soap.
This Act of Parliament was passed to combat the shortage of these products, in addition to staples such as milk, butter or corn flour in the markets.
The law was criticized by the opposition which blames the government for the shortage after 12 years of currency and price controls.
“A country where the government requests a loan to buy toilet paper, soap, sanitary towels and toothpaste is really screwed,” said opposition lawmaker Julio Montoya.
Earlier this month the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) reported that the shortages are affecting 21.3 percent of basic products, while inflation had reached a three-year maximum in April, closing at 4.3 percent for the month.
And what will they do next month when this emergency supply of toilet paper runs out?
They would do better to address the root cause of the problem, the destructive socialist policies the government has been pursuing. Instead, they keep on going with the same stupidity.
