Holguin, Cuba Pitcher Yaisel Sierra Signs for $30+ Million with Dodgers
HAVANA TIMES — The latest Cuban multi-millionaire is the 24-year-old right-handed pitcher Yaisel Sierra who has just signed a US $30 million-plus 6-year contract with the L.A. Dodgers, reports MLB.com.
Sierra was one of the 150 Cuban baseball players reportedly leaving the island in 2015 in search of a professional contract. (See list below)
The Dodgers obviously see great potential in the hard throwing right-hander despite his control problems and relatively high ERA in five seasons in the Cuban baseball league.
Playing for Holguin, Sierra compiled a 4.35 ERA, allowing 266 hits in 285.1 innings, while striking out 212 and walking 158. Working principally as a reliever, he won 15 games and lost 21 over the last five seasons.
Meanwhile, the online publication OnCuba published yesterday a list of the record breaking 150 Cuban baseball players who left the island either legally or illegally in 2015. Here is the list, which included Yaisel Sierra.
