London Globe Theatre Coming to Cuba
HAVANA TIMES – The prestigious London Globe Theatre company will present two functions in Havana on August 7th, the 450th anniversary of the birth of English writer William Shakespeare.
A rendition of the classic “Hamlet” will be premiered in the Teatro Mella by this cast of world actors and actresses, currently involved in an international tour, taking the historic play to various corners of the world.
The current headquarters of the English cast lies in the Globe Theatre in London, a venue built with reference to the original, built in 1599 to house the Chamberlain’s Men, a company run by William Shakespeare.
When the town in Arizona purchased London Bridge, they erred in believing that they were purchasing the famous landmark of Tower Bridge. Instead they bought a late 19th century structure made with good Scottish Aberdeen granite. The same material was used to construct Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square and the statue of Nelson himself. He who laughs last – laughs longest!
For a minute I thought Cuba had bought the actual Globe Theatre, as did the town in Arizona, which bought, then had moved, piece-by-piece, London Bridge!
Hamlet? Really? Are they performing it in the original Shakespearean English? “This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” This just doesn’t translate that well.
