Alberto Could Bring Heavy Rainfall to Western Cuba
HAVANA TIMES – The first named storm of the hurricane season threatens western Cuba, parts of Florida and the Northeastern Gulf Coast with heavy rainfall, reports the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The season officially begins on June 1st but Sub-Tropical Storm Alberto comes a week earlier.
The government of Cuba issued a tropical storm warning for the western province of Pinar del Rio.
Alberto currently packs 40 mph (65 km/h) wind with higher gusts. It is expected to strengthen gradually as it moves north.
The Cuban weather service notes that taking into account the characteristics of the weather system the rains will continue in the western and central regions of the country, expected to be most intense on the Isle of Youth and in Pinar del Rio province.
At 6:00 a.m. on Saturday the center of Alberto was located at 155 kilometers east, southeast of Cozumel, Mexico and 220 kilometers south-southwest of Cabo San Antonio, Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The system is moving on a north-northeast track at 11 km/h, said the Cuban forecasters.
