Cuban Baseball Teams’ Midseason Draft

Slugger Alfredo Despaigne will play for Santiago de Cuba after his team, Granma, was eliminated in the first round of league play.

HAVANA TIMES — The eight baseball teams to complete in the second half of the Cuban Baseball League 2013-2014 will begin play on January 14. On Thursday, a draft was held where each team was allowed to pick five players from the eight squads that didn’t qualify to continue.

Here are the players picked up by each team:

Industriales: Noelvis Entenza, Vicyohandri Odelín, Leorisbel Sánchez, Alexander Rodríguez and Elián Leyva.

Matanzas: Yoelkis Cruz, Carlos Juan Viera, Lázaro Blanco, Eriel Sánchez and Mario Batista.

Villa Clara: Ismel Jiménez, Alain Tamayo, Yorbis Borroto, Rudelis García and William Luis.

Pinar del Rio: Vladimir García, Giorvis Duvergel, Dennis Laza, Yormani Socarrás and Roel Santos.

Holguin: Norge Luis Ruiz, Yordanis Samón, Leinier Rodríguez, Danel Castro and Guillermo Avilés.

Isla de la Juventud: Ariel Miranda, Yudiel Rodríguez, Frank Navarro, Yoelvis Fiss and Marino Luis

Artemisa: Frederich Cepeda, Yosvani Alarcón, Jorge A. Johnson, Alexander Ayala and Dachel Duquesne.

Santiago de Cuba: Alfredo Despaigne, Yander Guevara, Alberto Soto, Yadir Rabí and Yunier Mendoza.

The second stage of the season begins on January 14th with the following series: Santiago de Cuba at Pinar del Rio; Matanzas at Artemisa; Isla de la Juventud at Villa Clara and Industriales at Holguin.
