Spain Doesn’t See Cuba Priority

HAVANA TIMES, Jan. 8 – The European Union (EU) policy toward Cuba “is not a priority under our presidency,” affirmed Spanish President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in statements to Germany’s Welt Online daily quoted by IPS.

“The EU should adopt a demanding position regarding Cuba,” added the president, just a few days after the expulsion of European Parliament deputy Luis Yáñez, which has tensed relations between Madrid and the island.

Spain holds the rotating chair of the 27-member EU for the next six months. Hopes had risen in recent months that the Spanish government would use that position to attempt to improve EU relations and cooperation with Cuba.

  • Dear HT, Could you please explain briefly why the Cuban government expelled Yanez? Was this reasonably motivated?
