HAVANA TIMES (dpa) — Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro arrived in Havana on Thursday accompanied by First Lady, Cilia Flores, to celebrate the 89th birthday of Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

The Venezuelan Ministry of Communication and Information said the Venezuelan leader traveled to Cuba and Havana and surprised his Bolivian counterpart Evo Morales, who also came to attend the celebration prepared for Castro.

The ministry published several photographs of Morales, Maduro and Flores together with Castro on a bus.

Fidel’s birthday celebration comes the day before Secretary of State John Kerry and hundreds of guests and reporters converge on the newly opened US embassy to hoist the flag to begin a new era in US-Cuban relations.

  • …..and Gorbachev with Honnecker before the imprisoning Berlin wall was torn down!
Innocents and ardent supporters of socialist dictatorships try to forget that the Berlin Wall was built to keep people within, not to keep people out. Thousands died trying to escape under, over or through it.

  • Are you kidding? Here’s the answer to your prayers. Google “End of Warsaw Pact July 1989” or “Gorbachev and Ceausescu”. Lots of photos of the leaders of that other failed Socialist bloc.

  • Pray tell, which photos are you referring to? Your imagination getting the better of you?

  • This photo reminds me of those old photos taken of Soviet bloc leaders just before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
