Ros-Lehtinen Favors Additional Restriction on Cuban Émigrés Visiting Cuba
HAVANA TIMES — Cuban-American Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen told the Café Fuerte website that she would support a change in the Cuban Adjustment Act, in an interview published by that website on January 4.
“Yes, I’m in favor of a change to the law so that those people who use it can’t go back to visit Cuba,” said Ros-Lehtinen.
According to the congressional representative from Florida, “You can’t say that you are persecuted for political reasons in Cuba and at the same time go back there to visit.”
Ros-Lehtinen, who is one of the principal advocates of the Cuban embargo, just completed her duties as chairperson of the Foreign Relations Committee of the House and is preparing to serve as a member of the Rules Committee.
At first glance the proposal makes a lot of sense . . . until one looks at the actual situation on the island. There are many Cubans who may not be in danger of being jailed, but suffer severe job discrimination and mistreatment by their CDRs because they are viewed as politically unreliable. They may be able to safely visit Cuba, but will never receive equal treatment on the island.
