Cuba’s Solis Gone in One Round

HAVANA TIMES, March 19 — Cuba’s Odlanier Solis took a couple Round One shots from WBC boxing champion Vitali Klitschko on Saturday night, dropped to the floor, and cried uncle before a booing crowd of 19,000 in Cologne, Germany.

The former Olympic Gold medalist (2004), made a poor showing in his first title bout after having running up a 17-0 professional record against far weaker opponents.

Reports have it that Solis, 30, earned $1.8 million USD for his dismal performance and Klitschko, 39, picked up for $15 million without even a workout.

Solis claimed after the fight to have taken a shot to the temple and, in falling, twisted his knee, making it impossible to continue.

As an amateur boxing for Cuba, Solis had a record of 227 victories against 14 defeats.  He turned pro in 2007 after leaving the island.
