“Island”, My Latest Film Project

Nonardo Perea

HAVANA TIMES — Once again, almost on my own, with a small camera and a lot of determination to make cinema, I’m taking a risk and making a new movie project, where I shine a light on my own fears, my desire to show what I think and how I see the things around me.

Island, shows what I think in a very personal way and it stems from my situation, which could be a lot worse. I have tried to do the best I can with the few resources I have, in whatever way I can. This will be a trilogy of fiction shorts, which depict three possible realities. Each of these stories is in line with the current times in Cuba where homophobia and people’s lack of freedoms still hasn’t been cast out.

I, as the only character, carry the main theme throughout each of these stories, splitting myself into different situations which could be a scene from everyday life.

In every one of these short films, the island is given great significance as if it were another character in the story, showing Cuban reality in some way or another and the particular gender injustices that take place, where the physical and verbal abuse that transvestites, transgender people, etc. suffer can be seen.

I make use of video art codes as well as experimental and contemporary trends in filmmaking.

Here, along with this post, I leave you with the first part of this trilogy and I would really appreciate your feedback, be it positive or negative, I have always been open to criticism because it has made me grow in some way or another.
