HAVANA TIMES – Yulieski Gourriel started today’s game for the Houston Astros as the cleanup hitter playing third base. He responded with a solo home run, 2 hits, 2 runs scored and one RBI in the game against the Cleveland Indian.

After playing in 15 games in the majors, Gourriel has an excellent batting average of .333 with 16 hits in 48 times at the plate with two home runs, three doubles, eight RBI and seven runs scored.

To date, the Astros have used Gourriel as a designated hitter, at first and third base and also in left field. So far, he has not committed any errors.

The Astros, fighting from behind for playoff spot, called up Gourriel to the senior team on August 20th after playing 15 games with several of the team’s minor league squads.

Gourriel, 32, was the best player in the Cuban league when he decided to leave the island in February this year, looking for an opportunity in the big leagues. He achieved his goal in July, signing a five-year contract with the Astros totaling US $47.5 million.
