Texas Governor Travels to Cuba to Explore New Markets
HAVANA TIMES —Texas governor Greg Abbott began on Monday a three-day visit to Cuba to advocate for trade relations amid the political thaw between Washington and Havana.
Abbott, governor of the second largest state in the USA, traveled to the Caribbean island at the head of a trade delegation that has on its agenda the priorities of trade, exports and travel between the two countries.
“Texas has an opportunity to capitalize and expand its economic presence at home and abroad,” Abbott, of the Republican Party, said in a pre-trip press release from his office.
The EngageCuba US lobby group, which advocates the lifting of the economic and commercial embargo on the island, said that the trip reflects the broad interest of politicians from both parties in Washington to end the sanctions
Trade missions, in general, are intended to help producers sell their products. This sounds like a governor-led ‘dog and pony’ show. What’s curious is that Cuba has very little money to buy the dog, let alone the pony.
