Cuban Interior Minister Abelardo Colome Resigns for Health Reasons
HAVANA TIMES — Cuban Interior Minister Abelardo Colome Ibarra, 76, has resigned for health reasons, Cuban television informed on Monday, noted dpa news.
“Lately, I’ve noticed that my health is not the same and I feel obliged to present a formal resignation to my high level political, state, government and military positions,” Colome said in a letter to Cuban President Raul Castro, and released by the official media.
In the letter, Colomé notes that he has “devoted 60 years to the Cuban Revolution” and says he will remain “a soldier at your service and member of the Communist Party.”
Born in Santiago de Cuba on September 13, 1939, Abelardo Colome was among a group of “historical” leaders of the Cuban revolution and was one of the closest associates of Raul Castro.
He studied at the “Frunze” School in the former Soviet Union and was head of the Research Department of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in 1959, then went to the Interior Ministry to head up the State Security in 1961 and the National Revolutionary Police in 1962.
Colome took on the post of interior minister in 1989 and will be replaced by Carlos Fernandez Gondin, until now the deputy minister.
Fernandez Gondin has the military rank of major general, is a deputy of the Cuban parliament and influential member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).
Until his stepping aside, Colomé held the rank of Army General, was a national deputy of parliament and a member of the Communist Party Central Committee. He also holds the honorary title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba.
Unfortunately the Cuban people have to wait until these octogenarian communists die before any progress can take place. And a long time it has been.
As a Cuban I find your comments hateful and disgusting. If by “won” you mean that a repressive regime has maintained power for over half a decade while denying Cubans basic rights, then you are correct. Cuba, the pearl of the Caribbean, has over that time been reduced to squalor, and the natural social evolution that could have happened never took place. One man’s whim keeping the Cuban people isolated and in poverty during all that time. Even today Cuba still has the worst Internet connectivity in the western hemisphere. And that’s purely a decision based on choice.
And before recommending someone read the life of Che you should familiarize yourself with his brutal history.

Blah, blah, blah. Don’t believe the Castro hype. I’m far from despondent and bitter. Fidel was a tyrannical dictator. What he has done to Cuba and, by proxy, to Venezuela is criminal and he will be judged harshly by history.
Moses is increasingly despondent, bitter and trying to infect others with his defeatist symdrome we hear in Marco Rubio hating the Senate or Jeb Bush having better things to do than being president of the United States
A small doses of honesty would allow Moses and his ilks to admit publicly, that reason, courage, leadership and Cuba’s powerful history of its willingness to fight to the last man in defense of its independence, sovereignty, WON this unequal, cruel and brutal war against its people.
What a difference of values, is to find a human being who willing to gives 60 years of his life to his country, while our pseudo politicians are always reminding us of their wives, children and football game, for which they cannot serve their nation without having to fly out of Regan International airport every Friday to sleep in their bed, thousands of miles away.
Moses would be well advised to read the lives of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, Mariana Grajales, Panchito Gomez Toro, Hatuey and Guarina and Che.
