Meanwhile, GRANMA (and, to a lesser extent, JUVENTUD REBELDE) reads like some sort of boring official gazette, for example, like our own CONGRESSIONAL RECORD, where the pontifications of politicians roll ever onward towards oblivion.  Alternatives, like  Havana Times, provide some relief,  but just like up here these alternatives are less available to a wider audience. The situation is equally unsatisfactory in the States. Although we are presented with an alleged variety of  media, these sources, like GRANMA  cannot transgress an inplicit political line. Moreover,  issues are almost never explored in depth;  instead, whether Right (e.g. FOX) or &quot;Left&quot; (e.g. MSNBC or ABC) issues are reduced to gimmicks, or &quot;talking heads&quot; transformed to ranting heads.
